Description
Even in stormy weather, whales need to come to the surface to breathe. They expel the air from their lungs and take in new air through their blowhole(s). Their blowholes are strong and connected to fibrous plugs which prevent water from entering their respiratory system when they are not breathing. When the waves are rough, they seem to lift their bodies higher out of the water, which probably allows them to raise their blowhole above the chop to breathe.
Occasionally, a powerful storm might disorient a whale and cause navigational errors. Storms can also change the trajectory of prey, and consequently, the distribution of whales in the days that follow.
